This page explains what we collect when you use this website, why, and what you can ask us to do with it. We keep it short because we collect very little.
Who we are
This website is run by Cryptal Media Group Ltd. ("we", "us"), a company registered in Scotland, company number SC613004, registered office Woodgreen, Barhill Road, Dalbeattie, DG5 4JB. We decide how your details are used, so we're responsible for them under UK data protection law.
Questions about this page or your details: email [email protected].
The contact form
When you send us a message through the contact form, we collect:
- your name
- your email address
- your company name, if you give it
- the topic you choose
- your message
You don't have to send us anything, but we can't reply without your email address.
We use these details only to reply to you and deal with your enquiry. We don't use them for marketing, and we don't sell or share them with anyone else.
Your message goes to two places:
- Our website's admin area, where only Cryptal's directors can see it. The admin area runs on our own server, hosted by Hetzner in Finland.
- Our email, as a copy sent to [email protected] if you choose the networks topic, or [email protected] for anything else. Our email runs on Microsoft 365, which stores it for us under contract and only uses it to provide the service. See Microsoft's privacy statement.
We keep messages for 12 months, then delete them. If your enquiry turns into work with us, we keep what we need for that work.
Our reason for using your details (the "lawful basis") is our legitimate interest in replying to people who contact us.
Keeping the site safe: Cloudflare
The site runs through Cloudflare, which protects it from attacks and helps pages load quickly. To do that, Cloudflare handles basic technical details of every visit, such as your IP address and the type of browser you use. See Cloudflare's privacy policy.
Cloudflare is a US company, so these details may be handled outside the UK. Cloudflare is certified under the UK-US data bridge (the UK Extension to the EU-US Data Privacy Framework), which UK law recognises as protecting your details. If that ever stops applying, standard UK-approved contract terms protect them instead.
Stopping spam: Turnstile
The contact form uses Cloudflare Turnstile to check that a person, not an automated program, is sending it. Turnstile looks at a small amount of technical information from your browser to make that check. Cloudflare also uses this information for its own purposes, to improve how Turnstile spots automated programs, and is responsible for that use itself. Cloudflare explains what it collects and why in the Turnstile Privacy Addendum.
Cookies
We don't use cookies for advertising or tracking, and we don't run visitor statistics. Cloudflare may set cookies that are needed to keep the site secure.
If you switch between light and dark mode, your browser remembers your choice. It stays on your device and isn't sent to us.
Visitor statistics: PostHog
With your permission, we use PostHog to understand how people use the site, so we can improve it. When you first visit, a banner asks whether you're happy for us to do this. If you say no, PostHog isn't used.
If you say yes, PostHog stores cookies in your browser and records:
- which pages you visit, what you click and how long you stay
- the type of device and browser you use, and roughly where you are (based on your IP address)
- where on a page people click and scroll (heatmaps)
- your answers, if you choose to answer one of our short surveys
PostHog also uses this information to decide which version of a page to show you when we're testing changes.
We look at this information to see how the site is used. We don't use it to identify you.
PostHog stores the information for us in the EU, under contract, and only uses it to provide the service. See PostHog's privacy policy. PostHog keeps it for one year, then deletes it.
Our reason for using this information is your consent. You can change your mind at any time using the Cookie settingslink at the bottom of every page.
Our mailing list
If you tick the box to hear from us, or ask for a download or your self-check results by email, we keep:
- your email address
- the date you signed up and how (for example, which download you asked for) If you ask for your self-check results by email, we use your answers only to send them. We don't keep your answers.
We use these details to send you what you asked for and, if you ticked the box, to email you when we publish new guides or news. We only email when there's something new. We don't sell or share your details.
Our reason for using your details is your consent. If you only asked for a download or your results and didn't tick the box, we use your email address just to send that, and we don't add you to the mailing list.
Giving us your email address is optional. You can download everything on our Resources page without it.
We send these emails from our own systems. We don't use a separate mailing list company.
If you ask for a download or your results without ticking the box, we keep your email address only long enough to send it. Download links stop working after 7 days.
If you tick the box, we keep your details until you unsubscribe. After that, we keep just your email address on a "do not email" list, so we don't email you again by mistake.
To unsubscribe, click the link at the bottom of any of our emails, or email [email protected]. You can sign up again at any time.
Your rights
You can ask us to:
- tell you what details we hold about you and send you a copy
- correct anything that's wrong
- delete your details
- limit how we use them
- object to how we use them
Email [email protected] and we'll reply within one month.
Making a complaint
If you're unhappy with how we've handled your details, you can complain to us by emailing [email protected]. You don't need to use any special wording. We'll confirm we've received your complaint within 30 days, look into it, keep you updated and tell you the outcome.
You can also complain to the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) at ico.org.uk. We'd appreciate the chance to put things right first.
Changes to this page
If we change how we use your details, we'll update this page and the date at the top.
